Exciting news from the Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Australia!

Thanks to the generous support of the Channel 7 telethon7 Trust, Lions Eye Institute has just welcomed the RTX1 retinal camera in its 2026 edition – a powerful tool in the fight to preserve vision in children with inherited retinal diseases.

Dr Danuta Sampson, Associate Professor Fred Chen and Dr Danial Roshandel are leading the project. Over the past 12 years, they have used earlier versions of the RTX1 to image individual photoreceptor cells at the back of the eye, pioneering early disease phenotyping and demonstrating short-term progression monitoring. The 2026 edition takes this further with faster imaging, a wider field of view, and cellular-level assessment of both photoreceptor and RPE layers.

The team will now develop imaging protocols specifically tailored for paediatric populations – a step that will meaningfully accelerate access to sight-saving therapies for children across Western Australia.

A huge thank you to everyone involved, and to the Channel 7 Telethon Trust for making this possible. 💙

Dr Danial Roshandel, Dr Danuta Sampson, Dr Fred Chen, Randolph Dobson and Prathiba Ramakrishnan (Lions Eye Institute), as well as Loic Le Kernevez (Imagine Eyes).
