The irx3™ Wavefront Aberrometer enables you to effectively measure and characterize the higher-order aberrations that, while they may represent up to and above 20% of the total aberrations present in most patients’ eyes, remain elusive to other products. Although many patients can still achieve “perfect” visual acuity (20/20) with the presence of uncorrected higher-order aberrations. Even with “perfect” visual acuity, common symptoms including halo, comet and starburst effects can have a profound impact on the overall quality of vision, and therefore the patient’s comfort and overall satisfaction. Put wavefront measurement to work for your patientStandard autorefractometers measure lower-order aberrations including sphere, cylinder and axis of rotation as they impact overall visual quality. Higher-order aberrations often affect specific areas of vision and, because patients can generally only provide information on their perception of overall quality of vision, assessing these defects can be very difficult work. Additionally, studies between retinoscopy findings and subjective findings have shown that there marked differences in results between younger and older patients. Retinoscopes tend to give a more positive estimation of refractive errors in younger patients while tending to provide more negative estimations in older patients. This is party due to the effect of alignment, but spherical aberrations can play an important role as well because of the natural flattening of the radius of curvature at the periphery of the cornea that causes the retinoscope image to be different at the center and edges of the retina. The irx3 provides detailed information on both the overall visual acuity and, by means of high-resolution wavefront maps, information on specific areas of vision that may be affected including indications for recognizing certain inherent signs of ocular pathologies. Characterizing pathologiesKeratoconus, characterized by the excessive thinning of areas of the cornea, can eventually result in extreme higher-order aberrations that make correcting the patient’s vision a long and trying process for both patient and physician alike. Patients with this disorder often experience a continued degradation of their vision that results in frequent prescription changes, adding to the difficulty of ensuring their prolonged comfort. The precision offered by the irx3 can help to recognize the signs of different pathologies, including keratoconus, to understand their effect on visual acuity and to determine treatment options. Determine treatment optionsModern ophthalmic practice offers a range of treatments that can provide quality vision and comfort to the vast majority of patients. The irx3’s versatility can be a valuable asset when determining the best course of treatment.
